- To develop the evaluation of chemicals in industrial wastewater, such as ethanol, nitrate and nitrite in wastewater by electrochemical methods
- To developing the evaluation of chemicals in foods such as sodium, glucose, capsaicin, glutamate and nitrite by electrochemical methods
- To synthesise electrocatalyst for application in fuel cells
The environment pollution is one of the world concerns. For environmental control, the evaluation of chemicals in industrial wastewater, such as ethanol in molasses, nitrate and nitrite in wastewater has been developed. Nitrate and nitrite are crucial threat to human health and ecological system. The steady accumulation of nitrate in ground water, causing severe water pollution, is a result of the intensive use of fertilisers in agriculture and the use of nitrates in several industrial processes. Nitrite is highly involved in human life since it is widely used in the food industry in order to preserve food and cure meat and to flavour and colour. The molasses ethanol waste liquid treatment is always a difficult problem in environment protection. It has large discharge value and caused serious pollution. The treatment processes are being developed. Nowadays, people tend to interest in health information and wish to be healthy. The levels of chemicals, such as sodium, glucose, capsaicin glutamate and nitrite, in foods are being concerned. A sensor for evaluation of these chemicals is being developed in term of sensitivity, selectivity and portability.

Apart from environment and health concerns, the limitation of fossil fuel is being concerned. Due to the limitation of fossil fuel, fuel cells have been studied extensively for clean and sustainable energy sources. Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC) are devices that can convert the chemical energy stored in ethanol molecules into electrical work. Ethanol is regarded as being attractive since it is easy to be stored compared to hydrogen gas and is less toxic than methanol. The key to improve an efficiency of DEFC is to find an effective anode electrocatalyst, in term of both activities and selectivities.
