Research Areas
MS and PhD in Bioscience programs are home to a broad spectrum of research expertise spanning microorganisms, plants, animals, ecosystems, biomaterials, health sciences, and computational biology. Our research is organized into eight major groups that reflect the diverse strengths and interdisciplinary collaborations within the Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University.

1. Microbiology, Biotechnology & Synthetic Biology

This research area explores the diversity and utility of microorganisms to advance biotechnology and industrial innovation. Key areas include phage discovery, beneficial microbes, microbial glycan engineering, yeast biotechnology, enzyme engineering, and synthetic biology for natural product biosynthesis.

2. Ecology, Biodiversity & Evolutionary Biology

Researchers in this group investigate biological diversity across multiple levels—from genes to ecosystems. Areas of expertise include systematics of amphibians, reptiles, bryophytes, and lichens; coastal and marine biodiversity; parasite and vector ecology; agrobiodiversity conservation; and evolutionary responses to climate change.

3. Plant Science, Animal Science & Agricultural Science

This group focuses on enhancing agricultural sustainability through fundamental and applied research. Topics include climate resilience in microalgae, rice–pathogen interactions, plant stress biology, plant cell culture technology, crop genetics and breeding, duckweed biology, and the conservation and improvement of indigenous livestock and aquatic species.

4. Food Research & Applications

Research in this area emphasizes food safety, allergen identification, and the development of novel food resources. Studies include IgE epitope mapping of allergenic proteins, safety analysis of edible insects, quality assessment of medicinal and edible plants, and biomolecular modeling of food-related proteins.

5. Biomedical and Health Sciences

This group advances understanding of human health and disease at molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. Research areas include cancer biology, innate immunity, antimicrobial mechanisms, metabonomics, host–pathogen interactions, antimalarial studies, and zoonotic diseases.

6. Biomaterials & Biophysics

Combining life sciences with material science, this group develops biomaterials for medical and biotechnological applications. Research includes nanomaterials for drug delivery, tissue engineering scaffolds, AFM-based biomechanical characterization, biosensors, biophysical modeling, and microneedle-inspired drug delivery systems.

7. Computational Biology, Bioinformatics & Structural Biology

This research group employs computational, statistical, and structural approaches to decode complex biological systems. Areas of strength include genome and omics analysis, ancient DNA research, protein structure–function studies, molecular dynamics simulations, biosensor modeling, and machine learning pipelines.

8. Chemical Biology & Drug Discovery

Research in this group focuses on the discovery, design, and mechanistic understanding of biologically active molecules. Projects include natural product discovery using engineered microbes, anticancer compound development, enzyme mechanistic studies, tRNA synthetase inhibitors, metabolomics-guided therapeutics.
